Chinese Bank Buys into South Africa's Standard Bank
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Acquires Stake in South Africa's Standard Bank
- Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the most valuable bank in the world, bought 20% of South Africa's Standard Bank for 36.7 billion rand ($5.5 billion)
- largest foreign investment by a Chinese bank--ever
- largest foreign-direct investment of any country in South Africa--ever
- Plan to create a common $500m fund to invest in oil and mining
Almost everything that happens in China these days is the largest thing ever. Reason for caution; moment of opportunity.

States and Power in Africa
Hi Jen,
The bank that was bought into was Standard Bank and not Standard Chartered Bank.
Keep doing what you do!

Hi Jen, you still over in Beijing? I thought that I would give you a Heads Up on the upcoming EU-Africa Summit in Lisbon. Let me know if you plan to write about the summit so that I may quote from your post and link to it.
Saw the post about the Africans and blacks from the Americas being rounded up and beaten by the Beijing Police goon squad. How could I have missed that news story? It didn't get any play at all here in Germany on either the TV news or the press. Any photos? That would be hot if someone had photos or video of the raid. Non? Ask Howard French, he's always roaming the streets of Shanghai and Beijing taking photos for his blog. Howard got rounded up and beaten too? You're kidding?
