An editorial in the Washington Post by Nigerian American writer Uzodinma Iweala begins with a funny anecdote about “perky” college girls manning a Save Darfur booth:

Last fall, shortly after I returned from Nigeria, I was accosted by a perky blond college student whose blue eyes seemed to match the "African" beads around her wrists.

"Save Darfur!" she shouted from behind a table covered with pamphlets urging students to TAKE ACTION NOW! STOP GENOCIDE IN DARFUR!

My aversion to college kids jumping onto fashionable social causes nearly caused me to walk on, but her next shout stopped me.

"Don't you want to help us save Africa?" she yelled.

My university had a similar brand of girls.  They would spirit off to exotic places over winter break and return with slightly slimmer noses—but the injustice of such privilege was not lost on them. 

Their sororities organized fashion shows, in which they starred, to raise money so that African children with cleft palettes could be afforded at least one of the many luxuries they enjoyed: access to a good plastic surgeon.

One day these girls would return to their native Manhattan, Philadelphia, or Birmingham, Alabama and chair benefit balls.  They’d Save the World in Dior couture from their castles in the sky, where no ever has to be poor or ugly or black (same diff).

Sometimes I have evil thoughts.  I used to wish I had a little brown child with a cleft palette in my closet just for this:  I’d whisper in his ear, “See that nice blond lady at the table over there?  She has candy.”  He’d go running up to one of these sorority girls to shake hands.  What if she didn’t see him coming, and was startled?  (Black people??  In Princeton?!!)  How fast would she recoil?  Fast enough to fall out of her chair?

There are some right now who are reading this and will want to say, "But a cleft palette is a serious health problem!  And these girls, at least they're doing something, even if they are preternaturally beautiful and not particularly self-aware!  Even if they've never once bothered to make friends with a brown person!"

Something.  Yes, it is always good to do something.  But if you really wanted to help, wouldn't you do everything in your power to make sure you that that something you were doing was the right thing, the right way?

And if you wanted to do that thing, legitimately, credibly, would you have to be African?

Would it at least help to be Black?

There is no agreement on what the "right" thing actually is. For these sorority girls and others, they do believe that they are doing the right thing. I think the efforts to make sure your actions are "right" would involve listening to African voices, which ties into your next point.

As far as being black, it may help in some cases, hurt in others. I have a nagging feeling that the policy and celebrity "save Africa" crowds give more credibility to words coming from a white face, no matter how distinguished the African. Only the books published in the West by Western authors (William Easterly, Jeffrey Sachs, etc.) get reviewed and debated in the West. I don't even recall hearing much about George Ayittay's works in the Western media, despite his being based in the U.S. No evidence to prove this, just a personal feeling.

I applaud most efforts to bring better health, education, economic development, and peace to Africans. However, just as you, I question some of the underlying motivations.

It's sad how you suggest they would only be doing the legitimate thing, the right thing, if they were black. Especially when pretty much most africans you meet do not self identify as black african but with their actual ethnic group, religion, region, nation, etc and not with a generic black pan-african identity, which is largely a construction of the west and diaspora.

Do I sound pissed? maybe because I am *god forbid* a college educated 'white' woman who doesnt feel the need to prove my cred in some totally artificial way, give somebody a list of my black friends, where I've lived in my life, or how much my parents make in order to talk passionately about africa.

I've never published anything in serial before, and something about it appeals to me, like pausing between courses during a meal to prolong the experience or aid digestion. But it clearly has its drawbacks.

I empathize with the anger - and sometimes the "evil thoughts" - that one may encounter when faced with the brutal reality of perceiving another human being, a Sudanese in pain or a Kosovar seeking independence, as the other, the ones that must be saved, disempowered and lost, awaiting American might, or a even a bloody fake UN crusade.

However, I ask you, and me, and all the enlightened ones to consider this: can we ever surpass the boundaries of our conditioned existence (as in to perceive each other as poor African or white Princeton elitists) to embrace each other first and foremost as loving human beings with divine potential? I ask this because I was disturbed by the idea that one may need to be a certain race or nationality to be able to affirm, empower, empathize, love, learn from another. I don't buy that for a second. Our metaphysical experience as humans exceeds the tangible.

Maybe instead of attacking the less enlightened ones on their blind and misguided beliefs, to save or not save one they may know nothing about, why can't we also apply our energy in enlightening each other by sharing knowledge and unifying in the name of human solidarity? Attacking unenlightened whites perpetuates the same vicious energy that has been going on for a long time.

I realize that madame j Brea feels the need to be controversial and so attacking white intellectual elites is the way forward.I wish the day would come when black middle class within our diaspora will start taking tangible steps to help alliviate the plights of thoes less fortunate whereever they exist. Enough of the empty talk time for real actions starting at home - especially in your inner cities. In the case of characters like yourself , Oprah and Senorita Condi it is easier to lament about foreign problems in far off lands while avoiding discussions of the problems that emenate at home in the land of abundance.

fortunately many of our non-black sisters and brothers looking for a cause and a purpose for their lives discover some of what Americans would consider atrocities and champion these causes--thus raising millions in money and awareness for the indigenous people of Africa and other brown and yellow nations.

Unfortunately, these same people would not give African- Americans the time of day in many cases, have no black or brown friends and would never entertain the thought of living in an urban environment where they would have to interface with black and brown people daily on the streets, as neighbors, in schools etc.

thanks for the interesting comments...i'm chewing on my fingers right now, but am going to refrain from responding because these are all issues i have addressed in these half-finished drafts i have sitting on my computer.

I'm not trying to be controversial. i just decided that i should try and be as honest as possible because why not? life is very short and i hope if i can be as honest with myself and others as possible, others might feel comfortable doing the same. i did have these thoughts about these girls when i used to sit in the campus center at Princeton studying. But Princeton was a very special place and at times a very twisted place when it came to race and class. It's not all of America, but it is one fairly important part and because we all live our lives once, it's the only undergraduate experience I will ever have.

Also, the Madame Brea stuff is really unnecessary (and makes me feel a lot older and formal than I actually am!). This is my blog, which means we're all sitting barefoot in my living room after dinner, sipping on whatever our favorite libation, whatever that may be, and exchanging ideas in the hope of having fun and growing together while we try and make sense of this crazy, crazy world. Those girls remind me a bit of the Bono you described in a previous article "Africans to Bono "For god's sake please stop!" " in that they have good intentions, but maybe not the best game plan. But that's sort off the paradox of aid that whenever you try to help someone you can actually end up hurting them. I don't think it means we have to drop the good will, but maybe rethink the action.

I'd like to see what else you have to say Jen. I thought this was a great post and found many of the things I've thought before throughout it. I think the sorority girls can even apply to people who just haven't really thought about why they're trying to help. Sure they're helping, but why? To say, hey I organized this fashion show to help raise money for Darfur! Or are they doing it becasue they see the horror in the actions occurring? I believe someone said to be happy they were actually doing something. And we should be...but whats the point of doing something when you don't know why you're doing it? Doesn't it become easier to "move on" to the next cause that seems to get celebrity attention?

I have very few black friends, like one, and she is mixed; I would never move to the inner city, or even gentrified neighborhoods; I don't know too much about Africa except from articles in major newspapers like the NYT or the Post, yet when someone stopped me on the street about ending genocide in Darfur, I signed the petition; when my company was fundraising for Maralia in Africa, I donated $50. I don't expect a gold star, or a tear-filled letter from an African child whose life was saved because of my meager fifty dollars, I just wanted to help because I've read and seen the horror, however limited in my own way. I have no intention to be Mother Teresa, or Bono, heck, I probably won't even volunteer half a day at the "Save Darfur Day" (unless there are cute girls manning the tables). But who's to judge that my offer of help to Africa, however trivial, is not worthy as long as my intentions were genuine?

Back in college, my liberal friends used to hate the sorority girls too, because the Delta Delta Delta sisters can collect more signatures on banning sweatshop labor in a day than my hippie friends in a month. Sad reflection of reality? Yes; college guys are pigs? Surprise Surprise! But if one out of a hundred passersbys became aware of the sweatshop labor issue and later refused to purchase a “Made in Sweatshop” tshirt, then I’d say, “Go Tri Delta!”

Africa needs help, the whole world needs help, the Darfur conflict, global warming, Iraq, gang violence in urban areas, etc; if we require people to be fully educated on an issue before they can offer help, well, the wait would be longer than standing in the beer line at frat parties.

Each one of us needs to evaluate our personal level of disfavor, and the following will help begin the process:::

2. If they utilized the "pull" strategy HOW CONVINCING WERE THE TACTICS USED TO GAIN YOUR TRUST???? Mildly convincing tactics mean they are offering you a chance. Very strong tactics are employed on the hopeleThere are many clues to be taken from the Simpsons, specifically the Ned Flanders figure::::
The gods reserve "executive priveledge" to eliminate anybody whom they don't want to keep, similar to the "grey area" issue above. When I try to help individuals I tell them to honor this day, for if they can realize they are corrupted and find the path based on my teachings it will be the most important day in their lives. If true the reality is these were staged events used to corrupt people ("easy time" tools or the disfavored who were to be reincarnated immediately upon arrival); this "good&evil in the marketplace" tactic is all-consuming in this capitalistic society and has costed people dearly.
UNSUBSTANTIATED::::In the end the gods would tell you it's your own damn fault and to fuck off, so picking correctly consistantly will render no benefit.
The Amish in the United States is the clue that should guide your decisions:::Focus on simplicity, strive for purity.

There were a lot of people who got out in the 70s who were ignorant, not understanding the system and open to corruption.

The gods approve the script and AI impliments it. They are hands-off. The compter manages everything.
There are very much two separate worlds::Earth is ugly and wicked, and being involved hurts people's ability to cleanse their minds of the evil incurred from Planet Earth.
