Japanese aid and Chinese investment in Africa
(Listen to me on the BBC!)
I was interviewed in Kampala last week on Chinese investment in Africa for the BBC program Business Daily.
Sadako Ogata, the head of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and former head of the UNHCR, was the lead interviewee. It was my very first radio appearance and I have a somewhat, let's say, "thinner" CV than Ms. Ogata, and so understandably I was more than a bit nervous.
Fortunately, the BBC is awesome. They cut out the stupid things you say, eliminate the uh...umm....,tone down the Americanisms, and make you sound smarter and more articulate than you actually are. They even promoted me: I'm a political scientist, and I haven't even started applying to grad schools!
You can listen to my portion of the Monday, June 25th edition of Business Daily by clicking here.

States and Power in Africa
superb interview.
You are too modest though. When I was on the BBC, all the editing in the world could not change the fact that I sounded like 4 year old. :D

Jen,
Entendu ton interview sur BBC ! Super !

You probably know this, but thought it might interest you, the launch of a one billion USD fund for to increase trade and investment. In today's state owned Daily News in Tanzania, it is just reported as being for 'farming, infrastructure and basic industries' (not on web yet). People's Daily is refreshingly honest and tells us it is for investment in chinese companies operating in Africa (http://english.people.com.cn/200706/26/eng20070626_387705.html). The People's Daily says this straight up, the Daily News buries it in the last paragraph with no explicit link to the new fund. FT is more critical than either (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/3a2e4570-2381-11dc-9e7e-000b5df10621.html)
I have a china in africa post bursting to get out of me, if I can focus it.

Do you have a link, Lova? I'd love to hear you. It's amazing to me how many bloggers in the orbit of Global Voices have been interviewed by the BBC!
Kifimbocheza, I knew about the original announcement at the Sino-Africa summit but I had not realized it had been formally launched. This is definitely interesting...although I am now starting to wonder if when Chinese invest in Chinese enterprises, the benefits don't just accrue to Chinese people. That's pretty much the business model here I am finding.

Great Post! There are always business models to be had, (such as web advertising) as it is so popular today. Having worked with many business owners I see them more concerned with the idea, rather than the feasibility, Once I ask them about cash flows (how are you making money) I can see their blank stare. Creating a business plan is very important
